Fire Alarm Safety

Fire alarm safety is important. This October 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week, which is the perfect time to review fire safety procedure at home with your family. You should also take this time to ensure your smoke alarms are functioning properly. Smoke alarms are essential in your hom fire escape plan, as a functioning alarm will give you an early warning to get you out of your home quickly and safely.

Here are some smoke alarm safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Smoke alarms should be installed inside and right outside every bedroom or area where people will sleep.
  • You should have smoke alarms on every floor of the home, and if your home is large, make sure you have plenty throughout the house.
  • Use an interconnected smoke alarm system, so when one alarm sounds, all others sound too.
  • Test every smoke alarm at least once a month.
  • There are two types of smoke alarms: ionization, which are quicker to warn about flaming fires; and photoelectric, which are quicker to warn about smoldering fire. Have both types installed in your home.
  • Alarms should be on the ceiling or high up on walls. Keep the away from the kitchen (at least 10 feet from the stove) to reduce false alarms.
  • Look into special types of alarms for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years, or sooner if damaged.
