Living in a big city like Chicago means a lot of walking, and a lot of traffic when driving. Both have their frustrations and their risks. Walking alone can make you a target for burglars. Driving through frustratingly-busy roads can be cause for aggression and accidents. You may also be a target for criminals even while in your car. Proper street smarts can reduce these risks and get you from A to B more safely.
Read below for the top steps to street smarts:
DRIVING
Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination; you will feel more relaxed on your journey. Aggressive driving is one of the most common causes for an accident.
Stay alert when driving, even if traffic is minimal.
Do not park in isolated areas.
If you suspect someone is following you, do not drive home. Drive to a gas station, police station, fire station, or somewhere else you can get help.
WALKING
Whenever possible, use a well-lit, busy path to your destination, even if it takes a little longer.
Just like when driving, stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
Walk with confidence. If you look uncomfortable or anxious, you also look more vulnerable to criminals.
If someone harasses you, tell them to leave you alone. If they don’t stop, shout loudly and try to get the attention of others in the area.
If leaving work or school late at night, ask a friend or colleague to drive or walk you to your car or transit stop.
Most of the time, the city is a safe and exciting place to live. Regardless, it is important to always utilize your street smarts to keep yourself safe.
