Secure your identity. We’ve all hear and read the horror stories about fraud that occurs on unsuspecting individuals using a name, address, Social Security number, credit cards, etc. Well, knowing what to do when someone steals your purse or wallet is one thing. Being ready for such action is something else. Here’s what the experts recommend:
- Use a photocopy machine to record the contents of your wallet. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. Keep the photocopies in a safe place where you can find them. You will have a ready reference that details what was in your wallet, what all of the account numbers are – and, the phone numbers you will need to call and report your cards stolen and cancel the accounts.
- Immediately file a police report in the jurisdiction where your wallet was stolen. This proves to credit providers that you were diligent. You can secure your identity by following this step.
- Immediately call the three national credit reporting organizations to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. The numbers are:
Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742
Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289
