Safe Grilling this Summer

No one enjoys summer quite like the Midwest – as soon as the temperature rises we are in shorts and sleeveless shirts, doing as much as we can outdoors, like grilling out with friends and family. While grilling is one of the most popular ways to cook food, it is also a fire and burn hazard.

Here are some tips to ensure a summer of safe grilling and tasty eating!

  • Only use propane and charcoal grills outside.
  • Make sure the grill is placed away from your home, deck or porch railing and any overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill.
  • Clean your grill regularly, removing grease or fat buildup from grill and trays.
  • Make sure the grill lid is open before lighting.
  • Never leave the grill unattended.

If you have a charcoal grill:

  • Only use charcoal starter fluid if you want to use fluid. Keep fluid away from children.
  • If you opt for an electric starter, use an extension cord for outdoor use.
  • After grilling, make sure coals are completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

If you have a propane grill:

  • Check for leaks by apply a light soap and water solution to the hose. If it releases bubbles, you have a propane leak.
  • If your grill has a leak and there is no flame, turn off the gas tank and grill.
    • If the leak stops, have the grill serviced by a professional.
    • If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.
  • If you smell gas while cooking, get away from the grill immediately and call the fire department. Don’t try to turn off the grill.
